EVE Online: money for nothin’ and the ships for free

Being a free player in EVE Online isn’t bad. You get a pie slice of the entire experience, from piloting ships to blowing up bad guys (PC or NPC) to manufacturing goods for sale in the player-driven economy to engaging in corporate intelligence and/or espionage. If you were a non-subscribing player, however, you could only do that from the seat of the game’s smallest ships, though, the frigates.

But that’s changed. Now with a free account you can fly even higher tiered ships: battleships, battlecruisers, as well as any cruiser, destroyer, and frigate. It’s a lot of ships. And you can imagine how the meta goes in games like this; there are entire corners of the internet dedicated to arguing which particular ship is best for which specific job. It’s nuts. But that’s part of the appeal.

EVE Online is available on PC and always, always updating. There’s this new expanded free component, or you can go deluxe and subscribe for $15/mo (though there are discounts when purchasing up to a year at a time).
