Super Mario Maker has sold 1 million units

Nintendo has announced that Super Mario Maker, their Mario level creation toolkit, has moved over  a million copies since it was launched earlier this month. That’s a million units in just under two and a half weeks, which is pretty impressive considering the Wii U’s rather depressing install base of roughly 10 million consoles sold.

I really enjoyed Super Mario Maker but felt it was missing some key features to make it the perfect level editor, specifically the ability to connect levels to make worlds and entire games. That said I hope this success prompts Nintendo to support the game with as much DLC as they’ve showered on Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. It may be a fever dream but I also hope they’re inspired to create more “maker” games; a Metroid Maker would be particularly appropriate, as Nintendo doesn’t seem all that interested in continuing that franchise outside of bizarre 3DS multiplayer shooters.
