What Are You Playing This Weekend? Infinity Runner Kombat X Edition

GTA V‘s Rockstar Editor is cultivating a batch of amateur movie makers, but modding is still a pain. The U.S. Department of Education will back a “Games for Learning Summit” at this year’s Games for Change festival in NYC. And Kill Screen Magazine looks at the rise of pastoral video games.

What are you playing this weekend?

I figured I’d be done with my Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past minimalist run by now, but nope. I keep finding myself stuck on Kholdstare, the boss of the Ice Palace. Doing these later dungeons with only the Master Sword is starting to take its toll on me. Still, it’s a fun project, mainly because it’s my favorite game in the franchise. Outside of that, I’ve also been working on Fossil Fighters Frontier and Titan Souls for a couple of upcoming reviews. I swear Fossil Fighters makes me think of what would happen if Jurassic Park met Monster Rancher.

The wait is finally over and I finally have my hands on Mortal Kombat X. I have been playing for hours already, but I will finally be able to get in some good, dedicated time with this game over the weekend. I have taking a liking to Kitana, Erron Black, and Ferra/Torr, and they will probably end up being my mains as I progress forward. The one thing I haven’t had time to do yet is to really sit down in the training mode and learn some big combos, so I am setting aside some time to really learn how to dish out some serious damage.

This week, Donkey Kong 64 finally arrives on the Wii U Virtual Console. The game has never been available digitally before; the only way to play it, up until now, was on the old N64. I really enjoyed this underappreciated gem back in the day, even if it was filled with fetch quests. So, expect me to be going bananas all weekend.

I was going to get Mortal Kombat X this week, but instead I went to Chik-Fil-A like a million times, so I’m just going to keep playing Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin. It’s probably for the best; I don’t think I would be able to decide which to play if I had both anyway.

What else is there to play other than Mortal Kombat X? I have been pouring hours upon hours into it daily since the review copy arrived early last week—and I still cannot get enough. Aside from that, I guess I should spend some time on other games that I need to finish up reviews on, such as the upcoming Infinity Runner, and maybe beginning my restoration project on the Super Contra arcade cabinet I just acquired.

Yes, I’ve heard the hollering. “Get out of the Hinterlands!” they say. But I love how the journey begins in Dragon Age: Inquisition. It continues the age-old tradition of taking a party from a pastoral RPG setting, and then gradually introducing the Crazy with syringes shaped like urban sprawl and dragon teeth. I like a game that roots me in a rural reality before throwing me into the overbuilt thick of it.
