What We’re Playing: The Rogue Master Chief Edition

Black Friday deals start earlier and earlier every year. EverQuest II turned 10 years old. And President Obama called on the FCC to keep the internet “free and open.”

What are you playing this weekend?

I’ll be spending quite a bit of time this weekend with Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth as I prepare for my upcoming review of it. In terms of personal gaming, I’m trying to figure out why I didn’t start Ys Origin a lot sooner on Steam. The gameplay reminds me of games like Secret of Mana and Illusion of Gaia on the Super NES, and I love those types of RPGs where the battles are in real time as opposed to turn based.

Still Dragon Age: Inquisition. So far nothing as traumatic as the Fade/Mage tower from Origins. Instead the game is simply exploding with content, which is traumatic in its own right. After 50 hours the quests should be winding down, not continuing to expand. So. Many. Exclamation points. Maybe, just maybe, I’ll squeeze in some FIFA 15, but I doubt it. BeIN Sports shows so much soccer and rugby that my hipster European sports needs are being met noninteractively.

I’ll be diving into Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, with an occasional break for Dragon Age: Origins. After thoroughly enjoying Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, I’m looking forward to getting behind a GameCube controller again for the game’s HD big brother. I’m way behind on Origins — one of the drawbacks of review season — but I’ll be damned if I don’t play through the whole trilogy within a year’s time.

Well, I am sure that there will be a ton of games played at the mini-game party that the Columbus GN staff are having on Friday night, but most notably I look forward to finishing off the campaign of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and digging into Assassin’s Creed Unity. Plus, I picked up a few older games recently that are sitting in my to-do pile, including Metro Redux and NBA 2K15 on the PS4. So many choices.

This weekend will be full of Halo: The Master Chief Collection shenanigans with the Columbus-based writers of Gaming Nexus, and probably a few other games tossed in for good measure. I’m also hoping to wrap up the single-player campaign of Advanced Warfare before finally cracking the seal on Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor. I imagine I’ll also be spending some time playing Destiny, as well as I’ve finally started to hit a sustainable cadence when it comes to leveling up my Titan.

My four-year-old is now playing Tiny Death Star more than I am. Not sure if it’s adorable or utterly frightening when she hums the game’s jazzy rendition of Darth Vader’s death march around the house. Assassin’s Creed Rogue showed up, and I’m getting a distinct comfort-food feeling. But sometimes it’s a warmed-up-leftovers feeling, too. And re: being a Templar, it helps that the main dude, Shay Cormac, looks like my punk nephew.

I’m almost finished with my first playthrough of BioShock Infinite, and I have to say: I prefer exploring Columbia to shooting up the place. This game could have been a walking simulator and I’d still be on board with the story. If I want to get punched in the feels this week, I might also pick up A Bird Story  a short, one-hour game made by Kan Gao, the creator of To the Moon.

I’ll be playing Frozen Synapse Prime for my upcoming review. I’ve put down FIFA 15 for now as I am looking into getting a PS4 on Black Friday, and would start up a new season and FUT Squad there. I’ll dabble in some Titanfall, then get a few rounds of Hearthstone and Two Dots in on the mobile.
